Manipur govt reacts to fake Facebook account; probe into misuse of internet in Churachandpur

Imphal: The Directorate of Information and Public Relations Manipur on Wednesday while appealed to the netizens of the State not to upload comments and pictures creating panic and sense of insecurity to any community, said it detected a Facebook account in the name of M Premjoy Meitei who “uploaded comments intimidating the tribal brethren residing in Imphal city by inciting violence and creating panic and insecure feelings among the tribal communities.”

DIPR in a press note said the Imphal Police Station has already registered a case and after proper investigation, it is found that the said Facebook account is a fake one.

DIPR in this connection appealed to the tribal communities residing in Imphal area not to feel panic and intimidated by such fake comments generated in social media during the prevailing law and order
situation, adding that the Government of Manipur is fully committed towards protecting the lives and properties of all the tribal communities for restoration of normalcy, peace and harmony.

In another news, the Manipur Home Department has asked DDG, Term Cell, Department of Telecommunication, Imphal to probe into misuse of internet connection by some Internet Service Providers and users in Churachandpur District for spreading photos and videos of arson during Manipur violence and submit a report on the same by June 1.

A notice written to DDG, Term Cell, Department of Telecommunication, Imphal on Wednesday said certain internet connection provided through ISPs in Churachandpur may have been used by miscreants for dissemination of communal tension/hatred/mistruct photos and  videos in connection with the prevailing law and order situation in the state.

The state government said it identified 8 user names and their WIFI passwords listed for probe.

They user names are LV Lane, Canara Bank, Dorcas Road (GBC), Nute Kailhang Mai, YPA Hanmuai Kiang, Dorcas Veng Eastern Delight, Salbung Chansel Clinic and SA Road, Tedim Road.

It may be mentioned that the home department on May 21 and May 26 already advised that all internet Service Providers (ISPs) providing internet through lease line connection shall be barred immediately except those who have specifically exempted by the government and banking and related united supporting banking services.

The Home Department said actions will be taken against the ISPs which failed to comply with the government order.
