Manipur Marks World Earth Day 2025 with Cyclothon to Promote Environmental Awareness

Ukhrul, April 22: Manipur joined the global observance of World Earth Day 2025 under the theme “Our Power, Our Planet” on Tuesday, with various events promoting environmental conservation. The Directorate of Environment & Climate Change, Government of Manipur, marked the day with a Cyclothon in Imphal city, aimed at raising awareness about the need for environmental protection and sustainability. The Cyclothon was flagged off by the Principal Secretary of the Department, Arun Kumar Sinha, from the Western Gate of Kangla Fort. The cyclists moved through key routes in the city, including Keishampat, Mayai Lambi in Pishumthong, Chingmakha, Babupara, and Sanjenthong, finally culminating at the Office of the Environment & Climate Change Department located at Porompat, Imphal East.

Addressing the gathering, Principal Secretary A.K. Sinha reiterated the government’s commitment to environmental protection. He shared that Manipur has set a target to ensure clean air and water by the year 2030, and that the government has been making continuous efforts in that direction. He highlighted several initiatives of the department, such as the solarisation of JNIMS Hospital, the establishment of an Eco-Resilient Climate Centre in Ukhrul, the distribution of E-Mobility Autorickshaws, and the installation of weather stations in all districts of the state. He also appealed to the people of Manipur to extend their support and actively participate in the Directorate’s environmental initiatives, stating that such cooperation is crucial for achieving the goals of sustainable living.

Taking part in the event, Dr. Kh. Palin, President of the Association of Health Care Providers (AHCP) Manipur Chapter and CMD of Shija Hospitals, emphasised the importance of environmental preservation for the survival of the human race. He urged everyone to come together to prevent further depletion of the ozone layer and to work towards a greener, safer planet. The Editors Guild Manipur also played a vital role in organizing the Cyclothon. Impact News Editor-in-Chief and General Secretary of the Guild, Rupachandra Yumnam, stated that Manipur is already experiencing the impacts of climate change, particularly due to carbon emissions from vehicles and fossil fuel extraction. He emphasised the need for lifestyle changes and encouraged people to adopt cycling as a sustainable mode of transport to help conserve the environment.

The event brought together government officials, civil society members, environmentalists, media representatives, and citizens in a collective effort to spread awareness and reaffirm their commitment to a healthier planet.
