Manipur police arrest underground groups with arms and ammunition

Imphal: Six cadres of three different underground groups were arrested by Manipur police on Wednesday with arms and ammunition, police said on Thursday.

The police arrested the six cadres in separate operations in Imphal West district, the police also said.

Four of them belong to proscribed KCP (Noyon) group and one 9 mm pistol loaded with 10 live rounds in the magazine, two hand grenades, three 7.62 mm live ammunitions, one empty INSAS rifle magazine, one car and three mobile phones were seized from their possessions.

The nabbed cadres were identified as Wahengbam Mathoi Singh (32), Sorenshangbam Bungcha Singh alias Winner (47), Thongam Joynanda Singh alias Boycha (49) and Ak Sanjoy alias Herojit (34), the police also said.

The police accused them of being involved in extortion of money from the general public. A case has been registered against them for investigation, the police added.

One more cadre of the same KCP (Noyon) group was arrested by the police on the same day. He has been identified as Laishram Momo alias Kiran alias Macha Meitei (31).

One hand grenade was recovered from his possession, the police said.

An active cadre of proscribed outfit PREPAK (Pro) was also arrested in another operation by the police in the same Imphal West district on Wednesday.

The cadre was identified as Chongtham Ronen Singh (35) and one hand grenade was recovered from his possession.

He was involved in extortion of money from government offices and businessmen, the police further added.

Meanwhile, in the ongoing search operations in the vulnerable and fringe areas of violent affected districts, a combined force of state police commandos and troops of Kumaon Regiment on Thursday recovered a cache of arms and ammunition from Saiton and Santhong areas of Bishnupur district adjoining Churachandpur district.

The recovered arms and ammunition were one local made pompi RL, two local made single barrels, one SMC carbine with one magazine, 11 hand grenades, two NMM mine bomb, three Pompi shell, two of para shell, one INSAS magzine with six live rounds, one SLR magazine, eight ballistic cartridges live rounds, four grenade launchers, two pata shell cover and one .45mm live rounds.

The items were recovered during the cordon and search operation that started from around 8.30 am and lasted till 10am. The seized arms and ammunition were handed over to Phaobakchao police station for necessary action, the police added.
