One nomination rejected, 10 candidates cleared to contest Manipur Parliamentary seats

Imphal: One nomination paper of a candidate was found invalid during scrutiny on Thursday, while 10 candidates have passed the process to contest the two Parliamentary seats in Manipur.

The exact number of candidates who will be contesting the elections for the two seats will be known after the last date of withdrawal of candidates on March 30.

As many as 11 candidates filed their nomination papers for the two Parliamentary seats till the last date of filing nomination papers for candidatures on Wednesday.

The nomination papers were taken up for scrutiny today at the offices of the RO of the two seats. Thoubal DC is the RO of the Outer Manipur (ST) Parliamentary constituency while Imphal West DC is for the Inner Parliamentary constituency.

The scrutiny for the nomination papers filed by seven candidates for contesting the elections from Inner Manipur Parliamentary constituency was held at the office of the RO at Imphal West DC office.

After minutely examining the nomination papers, the RO rejected the candidature of Ngasepam Nilakanta Singh, who filed his nomination from Universal Family Party (UFP).

Even as he filed his nomination paper as nominee of Manipur People’s Party (MPP), the RO accepted the nomination of Rajkumar Somendro Singh alias Kaiku as an Independent candidate after scrutiny.

The RO accepted the nomination papers of other five candidates.

They are Moirangthem Totomshana Nongshaba, who filed his nomination papers as a nominee of RashtriyaJanhit Sangharsh Party (RJSP), Maheshwar Thounaojam of Republican Party of India – Athawale (RPI – A), Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam of Indian National Congress(INC) and Haorungbam Sarat Singh who filed his nomination papers as independent candidate.

For the Outer seat, four candidates including two independents filed their nomination papers and the candidatures of all the four candidates were accepted after scrutiny held today at RO office at Thoubal DC office.

The candidates who cleared the scrutiny today are Alfred Kanngam S Arthur of Indian National Congress (INC), Kachui Timothy Zimik of Naga People’s Front(NPF), Alyson Abonmai and S Kho John who filed their nomination papers as independents.

The last date of withdrawal of candidatures is on March 30.

The polling for the two Parliamentary seats in Manipur will be held in the first and second phase, on April 19 and April 26.

The polling in the Inner seat will be held on April 19 and the Outer seat will go to poll twice, on April 19 and April 26.

The Inner Manipur Parliamentary constituency has 937,464 electors while Outer Manipur (reserved for scheduled tribes) has 1,022,099 electors.
