UKHRUL, AUG 15: The United Naga Council (UNC) has called a 24-hour Emergency Total Shutdown in all Naga districts and Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur from 11 pm on August 14 to 11 pm on August 15, following an attack on Naga Village Guards on Naga Independence Day.

The UNC condemned what it described as a “barbaric and calculated attack” by KNF-P Kuki militants, in which two Village Guards were killed and two others injured.

The deceased were identified as Wiriliangbou Chawang, 35, and Kawidinang Abonmai, 54. The injured were identified as Maliangjinang Abonmai, 50, and Namthiulungbou Prinmai, 45. The injured were airlifted by the Indian Army from Haochong to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, at around 5:30 pm for medical treatment.

The UNC said the attack on Naga Independence Day was a direct challenge to the Naga people, their identity and their right to self-determination.

The Naga apex body in Manipur also cited a series of recent incidents, including the August 11 attack on Tokpa Naga village, where at least 10 houses were reportedly set ablaze. It further expressed concern over questions surrounding the Kailenjang incident and the alleged obstruction of security forces and goodwill missions.

Calling for a thorough and impartial investigation, the UNC urged the authorities to identify the perpetrators and take appropriate legal action without delay.

During the shutdown, all shops, business establishments, offices, institutions and other non-essential activities have been directed to remain closed. Medical, fire and other essential emergency services are exempted.

The UNC appealed to the public to observe the shutdown in a disciplined and peaceful manner and urged Naga citizens to remain calm and united.
