Imphal: A sit-in-protest by a group of women in Imphal on Monday registered a strong protest against serving of legal notice to RPI Athawale national secretary, Thounaojam Maheshwar by Assam Rifles.
IGAR (South) sent the legal notice to the young politician who is currently campaigning outside the state to end the violence in Manipur through an advocate named Nitin Khera, a member of the Shillong Bar Association.
The legal notice was related with Maheshwar’s remark, during a public event in New Delhi on June 30, demanding complete removal of Assam Rifles from Manipur.
In the legal notice, it is alleged that Maheshawar’s remark not only defamed but portrayed Assam Rifles poorly in front of the people.
The legal notice stated that Maheswhar must clarify his statements in public domain within 15 days and refrain from making any more defamatory remarks against the security force.
Demanding immediate withdrawal of the legal notice, womenfolk from across Keishamthong Assembly Constituency of Imphal West district today staged a sit-in-protest at Keishampat Junction today.
The protesters demanded that the Assam Rifles must withdraw the legal notice within three days while threatening to launch a series of agitations.
Talking to reporters at the protest site, a local Meira Paibi leader said that Maheshwar did nothing wrong.o
“Besides, the demand for removal of Assam Rifles from Manipur was not raised by him alone. Every individual is demanding the removal of Assam Rifles”, she said.
