AGARTALA: The writings of Prof. Nongmaithem Tombi Singh continue to help people understand the cultural identity and social realities of Northeast India, Bangladesh Manipuri Sahitya Sansad President A. K. Sheram said on Sunday at an international seminar held in Agartala to honour the renowned Manipuri scholar’s literary legacy.
The one-day international seminar was jointly organised by Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Tripura and Nongmaithem Foundation at the Sahitya Akademi Hall of Nazrul Kalakshetra here in Agartala. Scholars, writers, poets, and literary enthusiasts from across India and neighbouring countries attended the event.
Delivering the inaugural address as Chief Guest, Sheram stressed the need to preserve regional languages and literature in the age of globalization. He also highlighted the late scholar’s important role in shaping and preserving Manipuri cultural identity both within India and among Manipuri communities living abroad.
During the programme, noted literary figure Kshetrimayum Madhabi was honoured with the “Nongmaithem Tombi Ningsing Mana” award, presented for the first time.

The seminar featured presentations and discussions by eminent speakers including Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Tripura President L. Birmangal, eminent writer W. Brimangal, Dr. Anuradha Nongmaithem, eminent writer Kabrabam Dhiren, K. Birola, Secretary Member of the Manipuri Language Advisory Board at Sahitya Akademi, and eminent writer L. Mina.
Speaking at the seminar, L. Birmangal shared personal memories of his first meeting with the scholar and described Prof. Tombi Singh as “a guiding force for many young writers and researchers.” He highlighted his role in promoting Manipuri literature and culture both nationally and internationally.
A special poetry recitation session dedicated to the late scholar was also organised, where poets from Tripura recited poems in his memory. The programme began with the traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp and invocation, followed by a welcome address by the organising committee.
