Ukhrul, Mar 15: The Maram Students’ Union (MKS) has condemned the government’s decision to revoke the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and fencing the Indo-Myanmar border. It stated that the Naga people, including the Maram community, have lived as one, sharing deep cultural, social, and economic ties that stretch beyond the artificially drawn border for generations. Also, free movement had been essential in their way of life, fostering unity, kinship, and mutual support across generations.

The student body stated that the government’s unilateral decision to revoke the FMR and construct a border fence without consulting the indigenous communities who have lived there for centuries was deeply unjust.

“These lands are not just geographical territories; they hold our history, identity, and way of life. Arbitrary policies like these only deepen historical wounds and further divide families and communities that have already suffered under imposed borders,” the student body said.

The union also expressed dissatisfaction with the Union Home Minister’s statement calling for accelerating the border fencing.

“Such actions do not serve the interests of the Naga people; instead, they create more barriers, physical and emotional, hindering our aspirations for unity, self-determination, and peaceful coexistence,” it asserted.

In conclusion, the Maram student body urged the authorities to recognize the living realities of the Naga people and engage in open, meaningful dialogue before making decisions that directly impact our lives and ancestral lands. It also stated that true leadership lies in understanding and respecting the people’s voice, not imposing policies that ignore our history, culture, and rights. Further, it added that the union stands firm in their call for justice, respect, and inclusivity in shaping the future of our region.
