Ukhrul: The continuous downpour in Manipur has caused a massive landslide along National Highway 202 (Imphal-Ukhrul road), bringing vehicular movement to a grinding halt for a few hours on Tuesday.

The huge landslide occurred in the Mongkot Chepu area at around 9 am, stranding several vehicles, including passenger transports, along the highway.

However, the issue was promptly addressed by the NHIDCL, which deployed machinery to clear the road, and vehicular movement has since resumed.

In May, a similar landslide was reported at the same location, disrupting normal life, especially vehicular movement.

Notably, the deplorable road condition along the Imphal-Ukhrul road continues to remain in a dilapidated state, requiring constant maintenance, especially during the inclement monsoon season.

The two-lane road under construction, which began in 2020 from Yaingangpokpi to Finch Corner along the Imphal-Ukhrul stretch, remains incomplete, worsening the already poor road condition. With rainfall showing no signs of receding, landslides are likely to increase in different parts of Ukhrul district, especially in remote areas.

Meanwhile, there are also reports of electric poles being swept away by the rain on Monday evening, leading to power outage in some locations, including Kazipphung and Hungpung in the district.

It may be mentioned that NH-202 has become one of the lifelines in Manipur since the ethnic conflict that first broke out on May 3 last year.
