Shillong, Jan 7: Meghalaya Chief Secretary DP Wahlang today said that the government is still opening its doors for talks with the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC).
His statement came after almost a year that the HNLC had pulled out of the tripartite peace talks held with the Centre and State government alleging that its five core demands, which include general amnesty, were not addressed and fulfilled.

Speaking to reporters, Wahlang said that talks will resume again when all parties reach a point of convergence.
“At that point of time, we were keen to continue with the discussion but unfortunately, there were some points, where tricky points as far as they are concerned and as far as we are concerned and we could not meet at a point of convergence as far as those issues are concerned,” he said.

“Therefore, we requested that they can go back to the place where they came from and have a proper discussion first and when there is complete clarity and when we arrive at that point of convergence then we can resume the talks. So, they went back and they have had meetings among themselves but they have not come to us to resume the talks. So, we are waiting. Our doors are open, that is the most important thing,” Wahlang added.
The chief secretary then said “there are some items, which are non-negotiable and there are some items, which are negotiable during the first round of peace talks”.
