Meghalaya: HYC President commits to curb drug menace

Shillong: President of Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), Roy Kupar Synrem said the HYC is committed in its fight against drug menace despite people indulging in drug trafficking are finding ways and means to ensure their business is not at all disturbed.

Synrem made the statement after appearing before the investigation officer (IO) at Sadar police station in connection with the case registered against him and two other leaders for ‘unlawful’ eviction drive against alleged illegal settlers at Lum Survey on May 23.

Speaking to reporters, Synrem said, “We have nothing to say against the Police department but we along with the people have seen the condition of the place at Lum Survey. We have done our duty and today I have come to appear before the Sadar police station (because we have decided) that we will cooperate with the investigation on the matter.”

He said another two leaders – vice president Donboklang Kharlyngdoh and assistant general secretary Isaac Basaiawmoit – will also appear before the IO of the case in the coming days.

Stating that the HYC will continue to work for the cause of the indigenous community, Synrem said, “Cases registered against us is just part of the journey but we have full faith and confidence that the people of Hynniewtrep are by our side and that we have reasons to fear.”

Urging the people to extend full support to the HYC in its fight to eradicate the drug menace from the society, the president said, “We also know that the amount of money generated from the selling and supplying of drugs is huge and we also understand that the people indulged in such illegal activities will do what it takes to get us out of their way (so that their business is not disturbed).”

“Such attempt will not stop us from taking up issues concerning the indigenous people. We have decided to continue in our efforts to bring drug users back to the mainstream,” he added.

Further, he informed that the deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills had invited the organization to attend a meeting to discuss the issue on May 27 but he later cancelled the same due to preparation for the upcoming counting for the Lok Sabha elections, which will take place on June 4.

“He (DC) had assured us to fix another date for the meeting. In the meantime, we will wait for the outcome of the hearing on the case related to the land in dispute at Lum Survey and see what action is being taken by the district administration,” Synrem added.

Last week, the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) took a suo motu cognizance pertaining to residents crying for help after demolition at Lum Survey.

The Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary to submit a detailed report on or before May 30.
