The Meghalaya police has asked all vehicle owners, who have retrofitted their exhaust pipes to get them removed and replace them with the original exhaust pipes.

In a statement issued on Monday, East Khasi Hills SP, S Nongtnger said there has been a rise in the number of vehicles, both two-wheelers and four wheelers, which are retrofitted with loud exhaust pipes causing noise pollution in the city, especially at unearthly hours, which is in violation of the Motor Vehicle Act causing inconvenience to residents of the city, including children and senior citizens.

He informed that the Shillong Traffic Police (STP) will also conduct awareness drives on this issue till April 31.

Thereafter, violators will be booked under Section 182-A4 of the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act, 2019, the SP said.
