UKHRUL: The Meitei Alliance has urged the Government of India and the Government of Manipur not to conduct the Census enumeration in Manipur until all internally displaced persons (IDPs) return to their original homes.
The Census of India 2027 in Manipur is scheduled to be conducted between September 1 and September 30, 2026 with an option for self-enumeration from August 17 to August 31, 2026 for house-listing operations. As this timeline approaches, the Meitei Alliance claims that the violence since May 2023 has forcibly altered the state’s demographic landscape.
It also noted that conducting the census risks recording a demographic map shaped by violence and displacement rather than the true demographic character of Manipur. It added, “Such distorted data could have lasting consequences, while inadvertently legitimizing the ethnic segregation created by the conflict and supporting narratives seeking to divide along ethnic lines.”
The Meitei Alliance has reiterated its call for the dignified return of all IDPs before the Census enumeration begins in Manipur.
