Ukhrul: The Meitei Heritage Society, Delhi Manipuri Society (DeMaS), and NUPI, Delhi, have strongly condemned recent remarks made by former Director General (DG) of Assam Rifles, Lt. Gen. PC Nair, during an appearance on the national television channel, NEWS Live. Nair denied the use of drones to drop bombs and fire missiles on Meitei civilians by Kuki militants during the ongoing conflict in Manipur, sparking outrage from the organizations.

In a press statement issued Wednesday, the groups expressed deep concern over Nair’s claims, labeling them as “misleading” and “insensitive” to the civilians who have suffered as a result of these attacks. They emphasized that numerous eyewitness accounts and expert analyses contradict Nair’s assertion, with many villagers having witnessed the drone bombings firsthand. Military experts and Manipur Police have also confirmed the use of drones in the conflict.

The statement further referenced a televised admission by Mr. Pojakhup Guite, President of the Kuki Students’ Organization (KSO), Delhi, on Republic TV, where he acknowledged that Kuki militants had manufactured their own rockets and used them in attacks on Meitei villages. Additionally, a video circulating on social media purportedly shows Kuki militants discussing the use of drones in their assaults.

The organizations condemned Nair’s denial of these documented incidents, calling his statements “a blatant disregard for truth” and “a callous disregard for the suffering of the victims.” They argued that his remarks not only tarnish the reputation of the Assam Rifles but also undermine the credibility of the Central Security Forces.

“This was an extremely ill-conceived public relations exercise,” the statement said, “and by indulging in this misadventure, the former DG has lowered the dignity of the institution he represented.”

The Meitei Heritage Society, DeMaS, and NUPI, Delhi, have called on Lt. Gen. Nair to retract his statements and issue a public apology. They stressed the importance of accuracy and sensitivity when public figures discuss matters of such grave concern.
