A rally carried out by staff members of MGNREGS of hill districts demanding regularisation of their jobs was foiled by the police in Imphal on Tuesday.

The rally kick-started from Imphal’s Minuthong and targeted to reach the chief minister’s secretariat was stopped by the police at North AOC in front of Hotel Classic.

The MGNREGS staff members carried out the rally under the aegis of the All Manipur Hill Districts MGNREGS Employees Association (AMHDMEA), the body demanding regularisation of the employees engaging under MGNREGS in the hill districts of the state.

Alleging that the state government has failed to address their demands, AMHDMEA had, in August this year, set September 15 as a deadline to regularise their jobs.

Talking to the media persons after the police foiled the rally, AMHDMEA leaders said that the state government, during previous Congress time, had regularised MGNREGA staff members engaged in valley district in 2016.

“The state government had engaged the employees of the hill districts first but unfortunately, they were left without regularisation”, one of the protestors alleged.
The association had, on many occasions, submitted memorandums to the state government, but failed to translate their demand into work till date.

The protestors then threatened that the association will launch intense form of agitations until the state government regularises the employees.
