SENAPATI: In a significant development for higher education in Manipur, especially in Senapati District, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved the conferment of autonomous status on Mount Everest College, Taphou, Senapati District. With this recognition, Mount Everest becomes the second college in the district to be granted this status.
The decision was taken during the Commission’s meeting held on January 30, 2026, following the recommendation of the Standing Committee on Autonomous Colleges. The college, which is affiliated to Manipur University, has been granted autonomy for a period of five years, commencing from the academic session 2026–27 to 2030–31.
The approval has been issued under Clause 7.4 of the UGC (Conferment of Autonomous Status Upon Colleges and Measures for Maintenance of Standards in Autonomous Colleges) Regulations, 2023. In an official communication dated February 24, 2026, Dr. R. Manoj Kumar, Joint Secretary of the UGC, informed the Registrar of Manipur University that the university is required to issue the necessary notification within 30 days regarding the grant of autonomous status.
As per UGC Regulations, the college must comply with all prescribed provisions governing autonomous institutions. Non-compliance with the stipulated requirements may invite action under Clause 13 of the Regulations, 2023. The college is also required to apply for an extension of autonomous status at least three months prior to the completion of the autonomy period.
The conferment of autonomous status will enable Mount Everest College greater academic flexibility in curriculum design, examination reforms, and institutional governance, while remaining affiliated to Manipur University. The move is expected to strengthen academic standards and promote innovation in higher education in the hill districts of Manipur.
This development marks a milestone for the institution and is anticipated to enhance its academic profile and regional educational impact.
