Mukul Sangma Flags Non-Tribal Participation In GHADC Polls

Shillong: Leader of Opposition and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mukul Sangma has emphasized the need for a collective discussion on the issue of non-tribal participation in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.

“This is a matter of discussion and this matter must be discussed in the right earnest… It is high time that all of us must come together and take cognizance of this concern and discuss and see how best we can address this concern,” the former chief minister said.

Sangma highlighted the importance of understanding the objective of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution, which aims to protect the interests of tribal populations.

“We must understand one thing that in view of the objective which is intended to be accomplished by virtue of the mandate of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, I think this sentiment is born out of the basic intent of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India,” he added.

The TMC leader called for a collective engagement among political parties and stakeholders to address the concerns surrounding non-tribal participation in GHADC elections, ensuring that the intent of the Sixth Schedule is upheld.
