IMPHAL/UKHRUL: Former Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh has called for fresh physical verification of cadres and weapons under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) arrangements, along with sustained action against illegal armed groups and early implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
N Biren made the demands during a press meet at his residence in Luwangshangbam, Imphal East, on Thursday, after meeting Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla for about 30 minutes from around 11:45 am to discuss the prevailing situation in the State.

He proposed that verified cadres under recognised peace arrangements be confined to designated SoO camps, while authorised weapons should be securely deposited and subjected to periodic verification.
N Biren also called for coordinated and sustained security operations against illegal armed groups, unauthorised weapons and individuals involved in violence.
On the displacement crisis, he stressed the need for early resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in their original villages, along with adequate security, reconstruction assistance and rehabilitation support.
He further urged the State Government to pursue implementation of the NRC with the Government of India, referring to resolutions already adopted by the Manipur Legislative Assembly.

N Biren said proper verification of cadres and weapons, effective action against illegal armed groups, resettlement of IDPs and pursuit of the NRC process were necessary measures towards restoring peace and stability in Manipur.
Speaking to reporters, N Biren Singh said armed militants should be dealt with with an iron hand, while diplomatic options should remain open.
“Even the Census was deferred in Manipur to implement the NRC, showing the willingness of the central government. When the people of Manipur unite, the Centre will not stop us. The problem is within us. The Centre is ready. They have already shown this through the deferment of the Census,” said N Biren Singh.
