UKHRUL: Several Naga student organisations have condemned the reported obstruction of a Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) delegation at Avangkhu Checkgate in Meluri district on September 19, where the delegation was allegedly prevented from proceeding to Myanmar for a cultural exchange with Naga communities across the border.
The delegation reportedly had reference letters for the proposed visit but was stopped by personnel of the 39th Assam Rifles stationed at Avangkhu.
The Angami Students’ Union (ASU) condemned the incident and questioned whether the restriction was endorsed by the Government of India, particularly in view of its stated recognition of the “unique history” of the Naga people. The ASU expressed solidarity with the NSF and called on Naga citizens to remain prepared to assert their rights and aspirations.

The Pochury Students’ Union (PSU), which noted that the incident took place within Pochury jurisdiction, sought a clear explanation from the Assam Rifles on the grounds for stopping the delegation. It questioned what specific security concern or violation had been established and under what law, order or written directive the personnel were authorised to prevent the delegation from proceeding.
The PSU maintained that security considerations should not serve as a blanket justification for restricting civilian movement. It demanded a clear, written and legally tenable explanation from the Assam Rifles and Government of India, arguing that any restriction should be lawful, necessary and proportionate to an identifiable security concern.
The All Sümi Students’ Union (SKK) also strongly condemned the reported action, describing the NSF as a representative institution of the Naga student community. It said obstructing the federation’s movement undermined the dignity and aspirations of the Naga people and called for respect for legitimate Naga institutions and their peaceful activities.
Meanwhile, the All Zeliangrong Students’ Union (AM) expressed concern over the incident, noting that the proposed visit was aimed at promoting cultural understanding, people-to-people relations and the historical and social bonds between Naga communities on both sides of the India-Myanmar border.
While acknowledging the security sensitivities surrounding the international boundary, the AZSU(AM) said restrictions on a peaceful cultural exchange involving student representatives required clear explanation. It urged the authorities to clarify the circumstances and facilitate legitimate cultural and social engagements through appropriate procedures.

The Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) likewise expressed anguish over the incident and said the reported restriction raised concerns about mutual respect, understanding and trust between the Naga people and security forces operating in Naga-inhabited areas.
AKM urged the Government of India and concerned authorities to examine the circumstances and address such situations through dialogue, transparency and mutual understanding. It stressed that any restriction on the peaceful movement of citizens or student representatives should be based on clear and lawful grounds and communicated appropriately.
Across their statements, the organisations expressed solidarity with the NSF and raised concerns over the reported restriction on its proposed cultural exchange. While their statements differed in emphasis, they collectively called for clarification from the authorities, lawful and transparent procedures, and respect for people-to-people and cultural ties among Naga communities across the international border.
