Following the death of her father, A.Z. Phizo, in London on April 30, 1990, Adinno assumed leadership of the NNC. She was appointed acting president shortly after his death and was formally elected president at a general meeting held at Kohima Village Hall on May 12, 1990.

For more than three decades, she led the NNC (Adinno) faction and remained committed to the organisation’s political position on the Naga issue, particularly its assertion of the Naga people’s right to self-determination and sovereignty.

“The Naga people mourn the passing of our National leader. Throughout her life she carried the responsibilities entrusted in the service of the Naga national struggle with dignity, integrity and strength, and remained committed to the political institution and aspirations of the Naga people till her last breath,” NNC/FGN said.

In her later years, despite limited public appearances, she continued to issue messages on the Naga political question. In a message marking the 76th Naga Voluntary Plebiscite Day in May 2026, she called upon the Naga people to uphold what she described as historical truth and remain resolute in their political struggle.

Her funeral service is expected to be held on October 10, with further details awaited.
