Senapati: Naga Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) commemorated the Universal Declaration of Human Rights(UDHR) along with Naga civil society organisations today at Naga Peoples Organisation Conference Hall, Senapati in Manipur. The programme was attended by representatives of United Naga Council (UNC), Naga Women Union(NWU), All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), Naga Peoples Organisation (NPO) and Senapati District Women Association (SDWA).
In a statement, the NPMHR said that the UDHR, which was adopted in 1948, has a significant impact on the constitution of India “as every citizen is guaranteed human rights” similar to the provision of the declaration.

“However, the signatory of UDHR India unleashed a reign of terror in Naga country torturing and killing hundreds of innocent Nagas since it became independence in 1947,” the NPMHR also said. It added that Nagas continue to endure the devastating impact of the “cynically device oppressive policy” of the Government of India.
Meanwhile, during the programme today, a two minute silence was observed in remembrance of all Nagas who had “embraced martyrdom defending the rights and freedom of the Naga nation.”

According to the NPMHR, the participants of today’s programme discussed the “current dismal situations” as a consequence of continued promulgation of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, and prolonged peace process with no solution till now. They then pledged to work together to secure the “inalienable and indivisible rights of the Nagas.”
