Naga Student Bodies Condemn Konsakhul Assault, Warns of Launching ‘Democratic Agitation’

Imphal, April 18: The Zeme Students’ Organization Manipur (ZSOM), the All Inpui Students’ Union (AISU), the Rongmei Naga Students’ Organization Manipur (RNSOM), and the Liangmai Naga Katimai Ruangdi, Manipur (LNKR) have strongly condemned the “violent and unprovoked assault against Konsakhul/Konsaram villagers” carried out on April 5, 2025 by Thangnaimang Veiphei who is chief of L. Phaijang Kuki village, Thangkhulen Veiphei who is chief of Munlai Kuki village and Houmang Veiphei who is chief of Haraothel Kuki village.

In a joint statement, the four student organisations said these individuals orchestrated a brutal attack against the “peaceful residents of Konsakhul Naga village” during a period of officially imposed curfew. The village chief, the chairman, and three others were abducted and subjected to third-degree, life-threatening torture, the four student bodies also said. As a result, the chief and the chairman “remain hospitalized due to the severity of the injuries sustained,” they added.

The four student bodies said, “As law-abiding citizens and firm believers of peaceful coexistence, we have waited in good faith for the authorities to take appropriate legal action. However, no action has been taken to date, which raises serious concerns regarding the impartiality and effectiveness of the administration. A formal complaint identifying the culprits was filed on April 5, 2025, at the Kangpokpi Police Station.”

The four student bodies further stated that they firmly support and endorse all necessary measures—even to make sacrifices—”to protect our ancestral land”. The student bodies then “earnestly” urged the Governor of Manipur and the concerned administration to book the “above identified culprits within five (5) days and deliver justice at the earliest”. They cautioned that failure to do so will leave “us with no option but to launch democratic forms of agitation, including blocking national highways and state highways within our jurisdiction, as a peaceful protest demanding justice.”

The four student bodies said the administration will bear full responsibility for any consequences arising from its continued inaction and failure to uphold the rule of law.
