IMPHAL/UKHRUL: People of Nambol Sabal Leikai and adjoining areas on Saturday observed a commemorative ceremony in memory of Naib Subedar Shyam Gurung and Rifleman Ranjit Singh Kashyap of 33 Assam Rifles, who lost their lives on September 19, 2025, while returning from a flood relief operation in the Mayang Imphal and Wangoi areas.
The programme was held at the Nambol Sabal Leikai Community Hall and attended by Meira Paibis, students, local residents and other members of the community.
Commandant of 33 Assam Rifles, Colonel Radha Krishan, along with other Assam Rifles officers, attended the ceremony and paid tribute to the two personnel.

Addressing the gathering, Col Radha Krishan said the sacrifice of the two personnel would never be forgotten, describing them as heroes who would continue to remain alive in the hearts and minds of the people.
He recalled that on September 19, 2025, the personnel had gone to the Mayang Imphal and Wangoi areas, which were affected by flash floods, to assist in relief operations and help save people affected by the disaster.
“After the flood relief operation, saving the lives of hundreds of people there, they were returning in the evening when the tragic incident happened,” he said.
The Commandant said soldiers work for society, peace and the nation, stressing that Assam Rifles would continue to stand with the people whenever assistance is required.
“For us, the nation is supreme. For us, the people of this country are supreme,” he said, adding that the force would continue working to maintain peace and provide assistance to civil authorities.
Col Radha Krishan also expressed gratitude to the local community, elders, students and media persons for participating in and supporting the commemorative programme.

Meanwhile, Meira Paibi representative L. Sorojini appealed to all concerned to ensure that such incidents do not occur in public areas, saying that attacks in populated areas can create fear and panic among civilians.
She also expressed condolences over the deaths of Naib Subedar Shyam Gurung and Rifleman Ranjit Singh Kashyap.
