National Seminar on Education and Skill Development held

Maram, March 28, 2025: The Department of Social Work, Don Bosco College (Autonomous), Maram, successfully organized a two day National Seminar on “Education and Skill Development: Pathways for Children and Youth Empowerment” on March 27–28, 2025.

The seminar brought together academicians, practitioners, research scholars, and students from various institutions to discuss strategies for strengthening education and skill development initiatives.

The inaugural session was attended by S. Lungbuiba Thangal, MCS, SDO/BDO Purul and former president of Thangal Anleinao Jonlong (TAJ), along with Rev. Fr. (Dr.) Sebastian KO. The session commenced with the lighting of the candle and an invocation prayer by Fr. Devassy Pallaty, Rector.

In his address, Rev. Fr. Dr. K.O Sebastian, the principal of Don Bosco College, commended the Department of Social Work for its active engagement in diverse activities and emphasized the evolving nature of education. He highlighted that while education remains fundamental, skill development is crucial in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP). Stressing the need for a shift in societal attitudes, he urged the audience to overcome stereotypes that devalue skill-based professions and embrace holistic learning that integrates both academic knowledge and practical expertise.

S. Lungbuiba Thangal, in his speech emphasized the relevance of the seminar’s themes, particularly addressing inefficiencies in government schools due to inadequate infrastructure and financial constraints. He acknowledged the role of private institutions in bridging these gaps, ensuring access to quality education where public systems fall short. Encouraging a mindset of passion and contribution, he urged students and educators to reflect on how they can actively make a difference in society. He further stressed the importance of continuing such seminars to foster dialogue and drive meaningful educational reforms.

The event also saw participation from Vice Principals, faculty members, research scholars, and students.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Elija Chara and set the stage for in-depth discussions and followed by multiple technical sessions featuring scholars and experts from premier institutions such as Assam University, Mizoram University, Nagaland University, Manipur University, Arunachal University of Studies, Kristu Jayanti College (Bengaluru), and Rajiv Gandhi University (Arunachal Pradesh), among others.

The seminar aimed to explore the connection between education, skill development, and empowerment, particularly in fostering inclusive and equitable learning pathways for marginalized communities. Through comprehensive deliberations, participants gained insights into challenges faced by children and youth in accessing quality education and skill training and the transformative impact of such opportunities.

The event concluded with a valedictory session, where faculty members and experts emphasized the need for sustained collaboration in advancing education and skill development initiatives. Certificates of participation and presentation were awarded, recognizing contributors for their efforts. Dr. Evergreat Wanglar, Convener and Head of the Department, expressed gratitude to all participants and reaffirmed the commitment to fostering educational opportunities and empowerment for children and youth.
