NEW DELHI/UKHRUL: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday arrested a prime accused in the 2023 killing of Moreh Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Chingtham Anandakumar Singh in an attack by suspected Kuki militants in Manipur.

As per the NIA, the accused, Otkhothang Baite @ Othang Baite, a resident of Moreh in Tengnoupal district, was involved in the conspiracy behind the attack by members of a suspected Kuki militant group on a district police team in a playground.

Baite is the second prime accused of the case. The anti-terror agency had earlier this month arrested another accused, Kamginthang Gangte in the case.

The militants had opened fire at the district police team on October 31, 2023 during the peak of ethnic violence in the north-eastern state.

Singh succumbed to his injuries after he was hit by a bullet in his stomach in an attack by members of a suspected Kuki militant group on October 31, 2023  while overseeing work on a helipad in Moreh town during the peak of the ethnic violence in the northeastern state.

The case was taken over by the NIA in March 2024.

“During investigation, NIA found the conspiracy to have been aimed at creating terror in Manipur,” the NIA said in a statement.

Investigation in the case RC-02/2024/NIA/IMP is continuing, the NIA added.
