UKHRUL: The Naga People’s Front (NPF) has expressed deep concern over the reported gunfight between two Naga armed groups that occurred in the early hours of January 9 in Naga-inhabited areas of Myanmar. The incident, which led to the loss of lives and injuries among Naga youths, has cast a shadow over the hopes with which the Naga people welcomed the New Year 2026.
At a time meant for renewal, unity, and collective aspiration, violence among Naga brothers is profoundly disheartening. Such fratricidal conflict not only causes irreparable human loss but also sends a troubling message, weakening the shared struggle for peace, harmony, and a common future.
The NPF has further voiced apprehension that the continued hostilities could adversely affect the atmosphere surrounding the forthcoming Naga Yoya New Year celebration, scheduled to be held on 15 January in Layshi Town, within the Naga Self-Administered Zone. The annual festival, which holds deep cultural and symbolic significance, is being hosted by Layshi this year, and any disruption would dampen the spirit of unity and celebration that the occasion represents.

Calling for restraint, the NPF has appealed to all Naga political groups to abandon violence and return to dialogue. Conflict within one’s own family, the party stated, can never produce positive outcomes and only deepens wounds within the community. Peace, unity, and reconciliation remain indispensable for the Naga people, and all forms of internal fighting must come to an immediate halt.
Reiterating its commitment to a permanent, honorable, and inclusive solution to the Naga political issue, the NPF extended its heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. The party urged all Naga groups to uphold mutual respect and work collectively towards the welfare and future of the Naga people.
