NPYF Says Racial Remarks Against Tripura Youth Cannot Be Justified as Entertainment

UKHRUL: A video widely circulated online, in which social media content creator Amir Shokeen is seen making racially derogatory remarks against a youth from Tripura, reportedly recorded in Delhi, has drawn strong condemnation from the National People’s Youth Front (NPYF), the youth wing of the National People’s Party (NPP).

“The reported remarks, which appear to ridicule the individual’s physical appearance, ethnic identity and place of origin, are deeply concerning and contrary to the principles of dignity, equality, fraternity and mutual respect enshrined in the Constitution of India,” it stated.

The NPYF expressed concern that the identity, culture and dignity of the people of Northeast India must never become subjects of ridicule, discrimination or humiliation, whether in public interactions or under the guise of humour and digital content creation.

According to the NPYF, the public apology offered by Shokeen, including his claim that the interaction was scripted, still raises legitimate concerns about the use of racially insensitive expressions in publicly circulated content, which cannot be passed off as entertainment.

The youth organisation has urged the concerned authorities, including the Delhi Police, to examine the incident fairly. It has also called upon government authorities, educational institutions and digital content creators to promote sensitivity and awareness of the diverse ethnic, cultural and regional identities of the people of Northeast India.

The NPYF reiterated its opposition to racial prejudice and discrimination in all forms, calling for responsible public discourse, mutual understanding and accountability through lawful and peaceful means.
