UKHRUL: A One-Day Consultative Meeting titled “Demographic Threats” was held at the Rikhumei Taphou Women’s Conference Hall in Senapati Headquarters today.
The resource persons for the meeting were Dr. R. K. Chawang and Ashang Kasar, a social activist. The program began with an opening prayer by Rev. C. H. Lubui. Participants included youth, women, senior citizens, and well-wishers from the Liangmai, Poumai, Mao, Thangal, Maram, Rongmei, and Tangkhul communities.

Ashang Kasar shared his views on the current demographic challenges and threats facing Indigenous peoples in Manipur, particularly concerning ancestral lands. He strongly advocated for the unity of Indigenous peoples to protect their ancestral land, safeguard their identity and rights, and pursue justice.
He also raised concerns about the presence and settlement of Kuki refugees in areas such as Moreh, Tengnoupal, Kangpokpi, and parts of the Chandel district. He urged the Naga people to remain vigilant and address this issue through appropriate democratic and constitutional means, warning that inaction could lead to further demographic changes in Manipur.
Ashang Kasar emphasized the importance of maintaining a firm and united stance in dealings with the government until the concerns and demands for justice are adequately addressed. He called upon the community to be cautious in their engagements with both State and Central Governments, urging collective action for justice and the protection of Indigenous rights.

Dr. R. K. Chawang addressed allegations of corruption and the improper implementation of various government development programs, particularly in the hill areas of Manipur. He urged the public to remain vigilant and actively monitor these development programs being implemented by both the State and Central Governments. He called on the people to question irregularities and demand transparency and accountability.
He further stated that when corruption is effectively curbed, development will naturally reach the people. He appealed to the public to wake up and collectively fight against corruption for the betterment of Manipur.
During the question-and-answer session, Ashang Kasar expressed concern that the Indigenous peoples of Manipur are in a critical situation and that the Central Government has not shown sufficient sincerity in addressing their concerns.

He noted that various groups could exploit the current situation if Indigenous peoples remain divided or fail to develop a clear and effective policy and strategy. He stressed the need for greater unity, vigilance, proper policy, and effective diplomacy among Indigenous communities to safeguard their land, identity, and future generations.
The consultative meeting concluded with a renewed call for unity, awareness, accountability, and collective action among the Indigenous peoples of Manipur to address demographic challenges and protect their ancestral lands and rights. The meeting ended with a closing prayer led by Rev. Ch. Pouhotdin.
