Ukhrul, Mar 19: One person was killed and several others were injured in a violent communal clash in Churachandpur District late Tuesday evening. The confrontation occurred between the town’s Kuki-Hmar and the Zomi communities, despite the imposed prohibitory order.

According to media reports, the clash took place when the Kuki-Hmar individuals allegedly took down a Zomi flag following the assault of the Hmar Inpui General Secretary.  The violent clash resulted in the death of one individual and injuring several others.

Following the incident, the District Administration has appealed to the communities to maintain peace and harmony in the district.

In the second appeal issued on Tuesday, the District Magistrate Churachandpur Dharun Kumar S urged all individuals, community leaders, and groups to refrain from engaging in further violence and to work towards peace and reconciliation. Encouraging the communities to engage in dialogue, the District Magistrate also urged everyone to adhere to the curfew and restrictions that may be imposed.

It may be mentioned that the communal tension in the district sparked after the Hmar Inpui General Secretary was allegedly assaulted on March 16 evening by some youths, reportedly belonging to the Zomi community. The Hmar Inpui had demanded the perpetrators to surrender, failing which it warned of taking its course of action. The ultimatum was followed by violent confrontations between groups belonging to the two communities resulting in the imposition of Section 163 of BNSS in the District.
