PVSA 2nd Poumai Veteran Tournament Begins at Senapati

SENAPATI: The Poumai Veteran Sports Association (PVSA), established in 2024, on Wednesday kicked off the second edition of the Poumai Veteran Tournament at Astro Turf Ground, Senapati, with participation from ten teams competing in both football and volleyball.

The tournament, which will continue till April 23, marks an expansion from its inaugural edition, with volleyball being introduced alongside football this year. PVSA officials informed that more disciplines such as badminton and other are planned to be included in future editions.

Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Losii Dikho, who was scheduled to attend as Chief Guest, could not attend the tournament due to the prevailing situation in Manipur. Social worker Kh. Siile Anthony attended as Guest of Honour, while Joram Koveo graced the occasion as Special Guest.

An exhibition football match between Mao Veteran FC and Maram Veteran FC was also played as part of the opening day programme.

Speaking on the occasion, Joram Koveo highlighted that the tournament is not only aimed at promoting physical well-being but also at encouraging the younger generation to take sports seriously. Drawing on experiences from district and national-level competitions, he noted that such events help identify and motivate talented youth.

Guest of Honour Kh. Siile Anthony, in his address, emphasised the role of sports in building both physical fitness and mental strength, stating that a healthy mind contributes positively to society.

He further noted that sports promote unity and understanding among people from different villages and communities, fostering better relationships. “There is no ego in sports, only the display of skills and techniques,” he said.

Recalling his tenure as Director of the North Eastern Council (NEC), Anthony mentioned his involvement in the development of the ground and gallery, and acknowledged K Moses Chalai for his contribution made towards the construction of the football turf as well.
