Rongmei Council Calls Road and Camp Project an ‘Act of War’, Demands Immediate Halt

Ukhrul, July 9: The Rongmei Naga Council Manipur (RNCM), representing all its frontal organisations, has appealed to the Union Home Ministry and all concerned to cease all activities in the Rongmei region immediately.

In a statement issued by its Publicity and Information Secretary Absalom Riamei, the RNCM stated that the Kuki-Zo militant groups actively engaging themselves in establishing a base in the western foothills, with all the required infrastructures to support the base, has raised a serious doubt on the part of the government in their administrative policy to secure the area while deliberately ignoring the interest of all the concerned communities residing in the area.

The RNCM termed the ongoing construction of German Road (Tiger Road) initiated by some secessionist groups with a stretch of 7-8 KM within the land of the Rongmei tribes, the proposed layout for construction of SoO camp to accommodate nearly a thousand armed cadres and allowing the settlement of non-manipuri speaking residence in the region and requisitioning of land for poppy plantation as highly provocative which can be rightly interpreted as an “act of war” against the neighbouring communities.

“The ongoing construction of German Road (Tiger Road) initiated by some secessionist groups with a stretch of 7-8 KM within the land of the Rongmei tribes is a strategically planned project in connivance with the Union Home Ministry to destabilise the security of the Rongmei Naga community in favour of the Kuki-Zos. The proposed layout for construction of SoO camp to accommodate nearly a thousand armed cadres and allowing the settlement of non-manipuri speaking residence in the region, requisitioning of land for poppy plantation are highly provocative which can be rightly interpreted as an act of war against the neighbouring communities who have, so far, taken every possible precaution to refrain itself from indulging in activities which may facilitate a misunderstanding among communities and caused a bloody confrontation and once again suffered the untold miseries the communities have suffered in the past,” the RNCM stated.

Appealing to the Union Home Ministry to immediately cease all activities in their region, the RNCM stated that the continued act of dominance by one community against the others or sinisterly designed policies by government, non-governmental agencies, to undermine the integrity of the Nagas and the Rongmei in particular is “highly regrettable”.

The organisation is fully committed to offer every possible resistance with all the obligations the organisation bears, as the legitimate representatives of the people, it added.
