Salhoutuonuo Kruse & Hekani Jakhalu creates history in 2023 Nagaland assembly polls

Kohima: Nagaland 2023 assembly polls has created history by electing two women candidates — Salhoutuonuo Kruse and Hekani Jakhalu for the first time to the State Legislative Assembly after its statehood in 1963 in the 60-member assembly. 

Out of four women contenders in the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly polls  held on February 27, Salhoutuonuo Kruse and Hekani Jakhalu, both from ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) has been officially declared elected.

Salhoutuonuo Kruse who is a hotel owner won from the 8 Western Angami AC and Hekani Jakhalu a social entrepreneur, founder of YouthNet won from the Dimapur-III.

NDPP’s Hekani Jakhalu became the first woman in Nagaland to officially become the first ever woman to be elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly.

According to Morung Express, Hekhani defeated hear nearest opponent, Azheto Zhimomi of Lok Janshakti Party(Ram Vilas) by a margin on 1536 votes.

YouthNet official social handle took to twitter and said, “History has been made! Our warmest congratulations to our Founder, Hekani who has become the first woman in Nagaland to be elected to the State Legislative Assembly.”
