SDSA Clarifies Incident Involving Overturning of SP’s Vehicle by Protesters

Senapati, June 3: Addressing the media, Saloni Tony, President of the Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA), stated that a very unfortunate incident took place in Senapati. When a team of student leaders from ANSAM and SDSA was enforcing the 48-hour office picketing at the Mini Secretariat in Senapati, the incident occurred due to provocation from the SP’s office, which began the previous day. The student leader expressed dismay that the SP, who should act as a guardian of the district and understand the sentiments of its people, provoked the enforcing student leaders using central armed forces since the day before. He further alleged that the SP escalated the provocation by ordering his personnel to load a service weapon and by threatening the student leaders and volunteers, which ultimately led to the overturning of his official vehicle.

The SDSA President also condemned the role of the Additional SP (Law & Order), alleging that he acted hand in glove with the SP in provoking and escalating the situation. The President demanded an unconditional apology from the SP and his office, along with the transfer of the SP and Additional SP (Law & Order) within 48 hours.

ANSAM Vice President Bosco Kashung stated that the agitation has been taking place peacefully across all Naga hill districts. He called the incident at Senapati very unfortunate and condemned the retaliation by the SP and security forces. He noted that the agitation was launched in protest against the inaction of the central government despite strong opposition from the Naga community over the scrapping of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the forced construction of border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar border. The student leader also called for support from all sections of the Naga community as they pursue various forms of agitation.

During the protest, student volunteers also vandalised the office of the SP.
