Security forces commence combing operations in parts of Manipur’s hill and valley

Imphal, June 8: Combing operations continue to advance in Manipur to nab illegal weapons in a bid to curb prevailing violence and law and order situation. A combined team of security forces comprising 9 Sector Assam Rifles, 5/9 Gorkha Rifles and State Forces carried out combing operations at various villages belonging to both the Kuki and Meetei Communities in New Keithelmanbi area on Thursday.

Security forces in Manipur commenced combing operations since Wednesday to recover arms and ammunition including those looted from the police as well as armories of Manipur security forces following the eruption of violence. Official sources said that the combing operations were launched in the physical presence of the executive magistrates.

The combined security forces carried out the operation at Keithelmanbi Haibung village, Lhongchin and Sinnam Khaithong kuki village and along the foothills where Meetei villages are situated. There is no report of recovery of any weapons during the operation.

On a positive note, Chief of Haibung Kuki Village, Hemin Kipgen said there are no reports of any unwanted incidents among locals of New Keithelmanbi till date. He said locals are still sharing cordial relations with one another. He also said locals have no objection to search operations. Hemin Kipgen added that 16 CRPF had earlier convened a meeting for community leaders in Keithelmanbi, wherein resolution was taken to maintain peace in the area. The village chief appealed all to refrain from circulating rumours and urged both the Centre and State Governments to resolve the ongoing crisis and restore normalcy in Manipur.

Sources said that the combined force also conducted operation at Khoken village of Kangpoki and bordering Sangaithel village of Imphal West district on Wednesday morning.

The security forces raided the houses in these two villages.

As sought by the Army, the Home department has detailed 19 executive magistrates who will be present physically while conducting the operations in Imphal West, Imphal East, Kangpokpi, Kakching, Bishnupur and Jiribam.

The official source said that four executive magistrates were detailed in Kangpokpi district where the operations are to be conducted Col Ankur CO 2/8 GR as nodal officer. Ten executive magistrates were detailed for Imphal East and Imphal West where the operations are to be conducted with Col Amit Chaudhury Col GS IGAR (S) as nodal officer. The Home department also detailed one executive magistrate for Kakching district, three executive magistrates for Bishnupur district and one for Jiribam district.
