The village authority informed Ukhrul Times that the incident was triggered after “Kuki militants opened fire from their bunker towards the village.” The bunker, they said, had earlier been reported to security personnel for dismantling. In response, retaliatory fire ensued, leading to a prolonged exchange.

Images of the bunker, reportedly set up by armed Kuki militants, had been captured by villagers a few days prior to the incident.
