UKHRUL, Nov 1: More than 650 students from across Ukhrul district participated in the 7th District Level Open Mathematics Competition 2026, held at Ukhrul Higher Secondary School (UHSS) on Saturday.
The competition was jointly organised by the Longyo Education Trust and the Hunphun Government Employees Association, with students from Class V to Class XII competing in eight categories.
The competition aims to strengthen students’ foundational problem-solving skills and prepare them for competitive examinations, particularly engineering entrance tests.

Speaking on the objective of the initiative, Ningmareo Shimray, convener of the Longyo Education Trust, said the competition was organised primarily to groom students for engineering entrance examinations such as NEE-I, NEE-II and JEE.
Shimray also announced that the Trust plans to introduce an Open Science Competition next year to support students preparing for competitive examinations, including JEE and NEET.
A notable feature of this year’s competition was the inclusion of the “Bi-Quarted Number System” in the syllabus for all participating classes. Developed by Shimray in 1999 as an alternative method of calculation, the system accounted for 20 of the 100 questions in the examination paper.
Students also shared their experiences of participating in the competition. Ashon Leisan, a Class V student of Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, expressed enthusiasm over her participation and said she looked forward to future editions.
Senior participants said the competition provided an opportunity to develop a competitive spirit and prepare for entrance examinations and higher studies, while acknowledging that the advanced-level papers were more challenging than anticipated.
The competition concluded with a prize distribution ceremony attended by Sunita Jajo, MES, ZEO Ukhrul, as the chief guest, and A.S. Josiah, principal of UHSS, as the guest of honour. Both encouraged students to pursue academic excellence and participate regularly in district-level competitive platforms.
Certificates and cash prizes were awarded to the top five performers in each of the eight class categories, recognising a total of 40 students. The prize money was distributed as follows: ₹5,000 for first position, ₹4,000 for second, ₹3,000 for third, and ₹1,000 each for fourth and fifth positions.
