Tangkhul Naga Bodies Condemn Attack on Naga Villagers; AR Hand in Glove with Kuki Militants, says TNL

UKHRUL: The Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) Working Committee and the Kamjong Students’ Union have condemned the reported attacks on Tangkhul Naga villages by ‘Kuki militants’ in Sharkaphung (Sikiphung) and Kamjong headquarters in Manipur. The TNL, the apex body of the Tangkhul Nagas, has demanded a ‘probe into the security forces who have been found complicit with the Kuki militants, and award a befitting punishment’.

In a press note issued today, the TNL Working Committee stated that armed Kuki militants carried out heinous and unprovoked attacks on innocent Tangkhul Naga civilians in Sikibung village and Kamjong Headquarters.

“Beginning from around 2:00 PM on 23rd March 2026, Sikibung village was surrounded and subjected to indiscriminate and sustained firing by Kuki militants, creating widespread fear and panic among women, children, and the elderly. Several bullets struck residential houses, endangering lives and instilling deep insecurity among the villagers. The attack resumed early the following morning, resulting in grievous injuries to two innocent civilians, while firing continues unabated at the time of issuing this statement,” the TNL Committee said.

Also, it stated that at around 8:15 PM on 23rd March 2026, armed Kuki miscreants from Chassad village fired rounds of automatic and SBBL guns towards the civilian populace in Kamjong headquarters, which is in the vicinity of the 11 Assam Rifles unit camp and Police Station. Terming the act as an absolute challenge to the established State and Central authorities, the committee also added that the action forced the evacuation of more than 40 Tangkhul Naga families, including women and children.

Further, the TNL Committee accused the Assam Rifles of complicity in the act, stating, “Even more shocking is the revelation that Assam Rifles have directly warned the civilians at Kamjong headquarters that any form of retaliation towards the Kuki militants by the Tangkhul Naga volunteers would be met with violence from their end which proves that the AR are hand in glove with the Kuki Militants.”

“These coordinated acts of violence are not isolated incidents but part of a continuing pattern that has been repeatedly brought to the attention of authorities,” the TNL alleged, and added that the “complete inaction and apparent leniency of the Central Security Forces and Paramilitary Forces stationed in the affected areas and partiality of the Assam Rifles stationed at Kamjong headquarters have further emboldened the perpetrators. Their failure to intervene and protect innocent civilians raises serious concerns about accountability and responsibility”.

The TNL Working Committee demands that the State and Central authorities take immediate and decisive action to halt the ongoing attacks and ensure the safety of all civilians, book the culprits, and launch a thorough probe into the security forces who have been found complicit with the Kuki militants.

“Those found guilty should be prosecuted as per the relevant section of the Indian Penal Code, and awarded a befitting punishment…Any continued attack on innocent civilians will be viewed as a grave failure and implicit complicity of the security forces deployed in the region, it stated.

Additionally, the Kamjong Students’ Union has issued a 24-hour deadline to the relevant authorities in Chassad to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify those responsible, and present them before the appropriate authority.

Failure to take timely and decisive action will compel the Kamjong Students’ Union to take appropriate measures in the interest of safeguarding public safety, including the imposition of a complete ban on all Kuki movements within the Kamjong headquarters area, it warned.

Also, stating that the actions of the “Kuki militants” occurred in proximity to the presence of security forces, including the Assam Rifles, the union has also flagged serious concerns.

The student body then urged the concerned authorities to act with utmost urgency and responsibility to prevent further escalation and to restore peace, security, and public confidence in the region.

Meanwhile, the Kamjong District Magistrate, taking into view the prevailing situation in the district, has ordered all arms license holders within the Kamjong Sub-Division to deposit their arms and ammunition at Chassad police station.
