Why Save the Bats?

International Bat Appreciation Day is observed on April 17 to appreciate the wonderful flying mammals which we often ignore and to recognise the important role they play in our environment. Bats are vital to the health of our natural world and economy. However, today, bats worldwide face numerous threats and the destruction of their natural habitats, including caves and old trees. These ignored keystone species are facing a multitude of threats, including pesticide use, destruction of roost sites, over-harvesting for bush meat, climate change, and much more, putting them on the brink of extinction. Mining and irresponsible tourism have also caused a substantial decrease in their population, contributing to the overall decline of bat species and disrupting their ecological roles in various ecosystems.
