Tengnoupal: Awareness programme on women safety and security held

CHANDEL: With the aim to raise awareness on safety and security of women, a one-day awareness programme on women safety and security was held on Thursday at Meipou Community Hall in Meipou Village under Tengnoupal district.

Organised by District HUB for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Tengnoupal District under the initiative of Mission Shakti, the programme was organised under the theme “Women’s Safety Begins With Awareness”.

The programme tressed on providing women and girls with short-term and long-term services and information for their holistic development and empowerment.

During the technical session, Dr. Senjit Singh Ashem, District Gender Specialist (DHEW), Tengnoupal, spoke on Women Helpline (181) informing that the helpline was started with a view to provide help to women 24-hours a day. He said the helpline has provided help to over 45,000 women since its inception.

Mrs. Vasti Nagsha, OSC, Chief Administrator, Tengnoupal spoke on One Stop Centre (OSC) and said that it was the first point of contact for any distressed or harrassed women. She added that the centre provides assistance related to police, legal and even counselling.

Dr. Khullak Meson Maring, Specialist Financial Literacy (DHEW), Tengnoupal spoke on Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) and asserted that a girl child is as important as a male child and that they should be given importance. He said a society would develop better if a girl child was given equal importance as a boy child.

Speaking on Nari Adalat, Mrs. Waikhom Gunileima, District Gender Specialist (DHEW), Tengnoupal, highlighted on the various cases that can be taken up under Nari Adalat such as cases related to domestic violence, dowry, child custody , property rights and minor disputes.

She also stated that services came be provided related to personal matters, negotiations between husband and wife,counselling and even ewareness on schemes.

The resource persons stressed on raising awareness related to women and reporting it to the concerned at the earliest.

As chief guest, Mrs. P. Adim Tontang, President, Maring Napuiya Yinglam, appreciated the programme and called for a wider spread of the event. She said the Maring community were spread in a large area and that it would suffice if the programme was held in three to four areas for better reach out.

Attended by over 50 women from the Maring community, they also took a pledge to protect and support a girl child.

The awareness programme also stressed on the two pillars of Mission Shakti and its two main points – Sambal and Samarthya – and the various branches under it.
