IMPHAL/UKHRUL: Manipur Police have brought suspected drug kingpin Nongthombam Jamesjit alias Thoi, owner of Kangla Drugs & Surgical Pharmacy, to Imphal following his arrest in Ahmedabad in connection with a major codeine syrup trafficking case.

Jamesjit was arrested in Ahmedabad on October 6, after three persons were apprehended with contraband on October 4. An FIR was subsequently registered at Porompat Police Station, naming Jamesjit as a wanted accused in the case.

He was brought to Imphal International Airport on Thursday after police secured a four-day transit remand to facilitate his transfer to Manipur. He is expected to be questioned as part of the ongoing investigation into the suspected drug network.

The case gained further momentum after the disclosure of one of the arrested accused led a joint team of Manipur Police, Central Forces and YADAM to the Oinam Thingel riverbank.

The team recovered 52 boxes containing 8,320 bottles of CHOCO+ syrup, with each bottle containing 10 mg of Codeine Phosphate. The consignment had allegedly been concealed at the riverbank.

The latest arrest and recovery have raised questions over the wider network involved in the movement and distribution of codeine-based cough syrup in the state.

Police are continuing the investigation to trace the source of the consignment, its intended destination and other persons allegedly linked to the network.
