The Tangkhul Naga Wungnao Long (Tangkhul Naga Headman’s Association) in a press release Sunday termed the induction of 9 valley MLAs to the Hill Areas Committee a direct challenge to the hill people of Manipur, and questioned on what basis they were inducted.

TNWL categorically termed the order of Manipur Legislative Assembly speaker not only violate the Constitutional rights of the Hill Areas under Article 371(C), but at a time when the hill districts are fighting for implementation of the Manipur (Hill Areas) Autonomous District Council Bill 2021 in the monsoon session.

It said in the release that it will not remain silent. Direct involvement of the majority meitei to the committee, TNWL said, has to be stopped because the said Bill has nothing to do with the valley brethren. Such politics is bound to have disastrous impact in the valley and hill areas relations.

“The Tangkhul Naga Headman’s Association is saddened to read the bold orders issued by the esteemed Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker when the Speaker and Chief Minister has no say in the matter. Are they trying to fool the people just because they are in the hot seat? Or should we consider this as another chapter of division?” TNWL said.

It furthermore cautioned that “Against this backdrop, the order issued by the Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker has to be withdrawn with immediate effect. In the event of failure to heed our humble request, we will boycott any activities related with the Government of Manipur.”
