Tripura Makes History with 7 National Panchayat Awards

Agartala: Tripura has rewritten the narrative of rural governance by bagging seven prestigious awards at the National Panchayat Awards in 2024. Competing against nearly 2.5 lakh panchayats nationwide, the state has emerged as a powerhouse of grassroots development, tying with Odisha for the top spot. This unprecedented success has placed Tripura firmly on the map as a model state for effective and inclusive panchayat management.

Organized annually by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj under the Government of India, these awards recognize outstanding work in panchayat management and grassroots development. With a total of 45, the outstanding performance of Tripura has brought pride and prestige to the state.

The awards will be presented at the National Panchayat Awards Ceremony scheduled for December 11, 2024, in New Delhi. The President of India will felicitate the winners during the event. A state delegation led by Dr. Sandeep R. Rathod, Secretary, RD (Panchayats), Government of Tripura, will represent the state at the ceremony. Tripura’s winners will share a total prize of Rs 10 crore, further boosting developmental initiatives in the state.

The winners from Tripura are as follows:

Gomati District has been adjudged the Best District Panchayat in the country, earning the Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar with a cash prize of Rs 5 crore. This remarkable achievement highlights the district’s leadership in sustainable and inclusive governance. Meanwhile, Amarpur RD Block secured second place in the Best Block Panchayat category by winning the same award and a prize of Rs 1.75 crore for its outstanding contribution to rural development.

The Manubankul Village Committee under Rupaichari RD Block was declared the Best Women-Friendly Panchayat in India, earning the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar and Rs 1 crore for its efforts in promoting gender inclusivity and women’s empowerment. Thakchahra Gram Panchayat of Amarpur RD Block received the Gram Urja Swaraj Vishesh Panchayat Puraskar for being the second-best Carbon Neutral Panchayat in the country, winning Rs 75 lakh.

Further accolades include Betachara Gram Panchayat of Kumarghat RD Block, which secured the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar in the Poverty-Free and Enhanced Livelihoods Panchayat category, earning Rs 50 lakh for its initiatives in poverty alleviation. Rajkang Village Committee of Amarpur RD Block was honoured for creating a Child-Friendly Panchayat, receiving Rs 50 lakh under the same scheme. Lastly, Debbari Gram Panchayat of Amarpur RD Block was recognized as a Water-Sufficient Village, securing third place and Rs 50 lakh under the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar.

In response, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha lauded the award winners, calling it a historic moment for Tripura. “This is a proud moment for our state. These awards reflect our unwavering commitment to good governance, sustainable development, and people-centric policies at the grassroots level. My heartfelt congratulations to all panchayat members, officials, and staff for their relentless efforts in making this possible,” he said.
