UKHRUL: Two cadres of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K, Ang Mai) were killed by Indian security forces in Changlang District, Arunachal Pradesh, on Monday.

According to a press statement from NSCN-K(AM), the incident occurred at Doimuk Nala Area under Miao Circle, Changlang District, at around 8:30 PM on May 11. The deceased have been identified as Lieutenant Colonel Umkong from Nayang Village in the Tangshang Region and Sergeant Enu from Chithok Village in the Leinong Region.

The NSCN-K(AM) reported that the Naga Army personnel from the Pangsau Pass Command group were attacked by the personnel of 8th Assam Rifles while on duty within their ancestral homeland. They were mobilizing for peace and seeking to revive the Stilwell International Highway, which would benefit the local population, according to the statement.

Expressing profound shock and sorrow, NSCN-K(AM) condemned the incident, stating that the untimely deaths represent not only an irreparable loss to their families and comrades but also a painful reminder of the ongoing suffering and sacrifices endured by the Naga people. “We extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers to the bereaved families, standing in solidarity with them during this time of profound grief,” they mourned.

Further, the Naga Army condemned the “irresponsible and provocative act,” especially at a time when they have made a clear commitment to maintaining peace and restraint. “Such actions are not only deeply regrettable but also pose a dangerous threat to the fragile atmosphere of peace and mutual understanding that has been carefully sustained with great patience and responsibility,” the statement continued.

Furthermore, it emphasized that, at this critical juncture, the use of force and aggression only deepens mistrust, escalates tensions, and undermines sincere efforts toward peaceful coexistence and political dialogue. Incidents of this nature should not derail the pursuit of peace or extinguish the aspirations of a people longing for justice, dignity, and security.

The NSCN-K(AM) then called upon the relevant authorities to provide an immediate explanation regarding the incident, questioning whether it was directed by the Government of India or solely by the 8th Assam Rifles. They urged that such tragic and avoidable confrontations not be repeated. “Lasting peace can only be built through mutual respect, responsible conduct, and an unwavering commitment to dialogue, not through actions that inflict pain and further alienate communities,” the statement stressed.

The NSCN also reaffirmed its commitment to uphold peace, dignity, and justice through principled and responsible means.
