UKHRUL: Ukhrul district will host the upcoming ASMITA League Athletic Competition on March 8, coinciding with International Women’s Day. A press conference was held on Thursday regarding the same at the District Sports Complex, Bakshi Ground. The event aims to provide a competitive platform for the district’s emerging female athletes.
The competition will feature track events, including the 100m, 200m, and 400m races, categorized into three age groups- Under-13, 13–18 years, and above 18 years.
The ASMITA League (Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action) is a massive nationwide initiative conducted under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. This year, the league is being organized simultaneously at 250 locations across India.

The programme is a collaborative effort between Sports Authority of India (SAI), Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat), Khelo India and the state government.
”We encourage every young woman and girl in Ukhrul to step onto the field. This is not just a race. It is a platform to showcase your talent and bring pride to our nation,” stated Phami Vashi, District Youth Affairs and Sports Officer (DYASO), Ukhrul, while addressing the media.
The press conference was attended by Phami Vashi, DYASO, Ukhrul; Masopam Kasar, NSS Programme Officer; Worchipem AC, DYO; Chonchuirin Luithui, One Stop Centre, Ukhrul; and Shimreipam Zimik, DPO, ICDS Ukhrul.

Officials highlighted that the event will not only celebrate International Women’s Day but also strengthen grassroots sports participation among women and girls in the district.
Officials also highlighted that the initiative is part of a larger vision to identify and nurture talent for international stages like the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympics. By focusing on district-level participation, the organizers hope to foster a robust sports culture and encourage girls from even the most remote areas of Ukhrul to pursue athletics as a viable career path.
The event at Bakshi Ground will also serve as a capacity-building exercise, deploying technical officials and volunteers to ensure the competition meets national officiating standards.
