​Ukhrul: 102 Acres of Illegal Poppy Plantation Destroyed

UKHRUL: As a part of the illegal poppy destruction drive phase-2, the Ukhrul Police along with security forces and line departments destroyed 102 acres of poppy plantation on Saturday, while 17 more huts used by poppy farmers were dismantled and burned in Ukhrul district, Manipur.

As per the police, the combined team conducted operations at two different locations of the district.

In LM Block, a total of 57 acres were destroyed and seven huts used by poppy cultivators were burned by a combined team comprising District Police, 6MR, the Forest Department, and 18 Assam Rifles, under the command of SDPO Ukhrul.

In another operation at ​Mullam and Shongphel area, a combined team comprising District Police, BSF, the Forest Department, 4 Mahar Regiment, NCB and NAB, under the command of SDPO Jessami destroyed a total of 45 acres  and burned 10 huts used by poppy cultivators.

Police said ​FIR cases will be registered accordingly for both locations. The illegal poppy destruction drive phase-2 concluded on Saturday, it added.

It may be mentioned that the phase 2 of the illicit poppy destruction drive was conducted peacefully from 16 to 20 December 2025 across multiple hill ranges under Litan, Somdal, and LM Police Stations. The operation covered areas in Yaolen, Lamlai Chingphei, Shongphel, Mullam, Torah, Champhung, Teinem, Phalee, and Changta. In total, around 559 acres of poppy cultivation were destroyed, along with 82 huts used by cultivators. Poppy pods were seized, three FIRs were registered, and no arrests were made.
