UKHRUL: The mortal remains of six Naga men who had been missing since May 13 were recovered on Wednesday near Kharam Vaiphei village, bringing a tragic end to weeks of uncertainty surrounding their disappearance.

In a strongly worded statement issued on June 10, the United Naga Council (UNC) condemned the killings and described the condition of the recovered bodies as a gross violation of human dignity and human rights. The organisation expressed solidarity with the bereaved families and said the incident had caused immense pain and anguish among the Naga people.

“The prayerful expectation of the Naga peoples after release of the 14 Kuki detainees in the evening yesterday, is confronted with the shocking fact that the 6 innocent Nagas taken hostage by the Leilon Vaiphei Villagers and the KNF(P) militants, on 13th May, 2026 have been recovered not only as lifeless human remains but also in highly mutilated and dismembered conditions. This is most unacceptable and gross violation of human rights and disrespect for the dignity of the human persons. We condemn this sacrilegious and satanic act upon the innocent Naga civilians in the strongest terms,” UNC said.

The UNC has further announced a 24-hour total shutdown across Naga areas from 6:00 AM on June 11 to 6:00 AM on June 12, stating that the protest was intended to demand justice for the victims and their families. The UNC appealed to the public to observe the shutdown peacefully.

The apex Naga body in Manipur also stated that the mortal remains of the six victims would not be received until its charter of demands is addressed by the Government of Manipur and the Government of India. Among its demands are the abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki militant groups, the arrest and prosecution of those allegedly involved in the abduction and killings, and the declaration of the KNF-P as a terrorist organisation.

UNC charter of demands

  1. Abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) Agreement with all Kuki militant groups.
  2. Immediate arrest and prosecution of all Kuki National Front- President group (KNF-P) personnel involved in the abduction of 18 Naga Civilians including two pastors on May 13, 2026 at Leilon Vaiphei Village and the subsequent cold blooded murder of 6 of them, and also for the murder of Mr. Wilson Thanga Chiru at Joujangtek on the same day. Further, we demand the immediate arrest and prosecution of Mr. Lalboi Vaiphei, Chief of Leilon Vaiphei Village, along with all individuals involved in the abduction of the above 18 Naga civilians.
  3. Declaration of Kuki National Front-President Group (KNF-P) as a terrorist organization.

Chief Minister, Manipur, the wife of Mr. Semtinthang @ Thangboi Kipgen, President KNF-P, a Kuki Militant group who is complicit in the murder of the Naga civilians mentioned above. This will restore the public trust and confidence in the state government. Her continuation in office will amount to willful compromise of the integrity of internal
security concerns of both the State and the Nation at large
    .

The development comes nearly a month after 18 Naga civilians, including two pastors, were allegedly abducted from the Leilon Vaiphei area on May 13. While several of the abductees were subsequently released, six remained unaccounted for until the recovery of the bodies.
