Ukhrul, September 8: The United Naga Council (UNC), in a press release, condemned the abduction and inhuman torture inflicted upon Th. Merangshing Charanga, an innocent Naga villager of Choktong village, on 1st September 2025 by the People’s Defence Force (PDF).

The statement mentioned that the fugitives, who have been sheltered in Manipur along the Indo-Myanmar villages since November 2023 after the fall of Thanan in Myanmar’s Sagaing region, have created unbearable hardships for the Naga villagers of the areas where they have been given temporary shelter. At stake is the survival of the downtrodden denizens, triggering a series of adverse impacts on the livelihood, security, and well-being of the native inhabitants, the UNC stated.

The third-degree torture and mental harassment inflicted continuously until his release on 3rd September 2025, without any reason, is condemned in the strongest measure, the UNC termed.

“Unleashing a reign of terror under the very nose of the law-enforcing agencies along the border areas, and their continued failure to respond effectively to all vices committed by the fugitives and the PDF, is highly questionable,” the release stated.

The UNC condemned the abduction of the innocent victim, the use of physical and psychological torture to coerce the victim into admitting crimes, and the extraction of information. The UNC stated it stands in solidarity with the victim and his family and called upon the Government and its law-enforcing agencies to take swift action to apprehend the culprits. It also appealed to civil society organisations to join in condemning such heinous abuses.

“If the culprits are not booked at the earliest and justice is not delivered to the victim, the UNC will not remain a silent spectator and shall be compelled to take up fitting actions from our end,” the UNC warned.
