US Withdraws from Multiple UN Bodies, Citing Sovereignty Concerns

Published on

UKHRUL: The United States, under President Donald Trump, has announced its withdrawal from 66 international organisations and treaties, including 31 United Nations agencies and the UN climate framework, according to official statements released earlier this week.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the decision was taken on the grounds that several of these bodies were “redundant” and posed a potential threat to US sovereignty. The move marks a significant shift in Washington’s engagement with multilateral institutions.

The United Nations, responding to the announcement, expressed regret over the US decision but maintained that its programmes and operations would continue despite the expected impact on funding.
