Women organizations reaffirm stand against alcohol legalization in Manipur

Imphal: Women organisations in Manipur have reaffirmed their stand against legalization of liquor as they observed 42nd Meira Paibi Day on Thursday.

The All Manipur Women’s Social Reformation and Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj) hosted the occasion at Mayang Langjing in Imphal West district.

Talking to reporters on the sideline of the observance, Nupi Samaj president Thokchom Ramani reiterated women bodies’ stand against the partial lifting of prohibition on liquor.

She said the state government should halt the attempt to amend the Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act, 1991, while lamenting on the government for unheeding the hue and cry of the women against the legalization of liquor.

The womenfolk were voicing against the legalization of the liquor with peaceful democratic forms of protest. However, no positive response came forth from the government till date, she alleged.

The veteran woman leader also expressed concern that youths of the society have been “drowning” in drugs. “The society is engulfed by drugs,” she added.

She then appealed to the government to be sincere in the fight against drug trafficking.
