Wung Tangkhul Region Issues Strict Order Against Poppy Cultivation

Ukhrul: The Government of the People’s Republic of Nagalim, Wung Tangkhul Region has issued a strict warning against poppy cultivation in the Wung Tangkhul region.

On Wednesday, the Caretaker/Central Administrative Officer of Wung Tangkhul Region issued an order stating that “cultivation/plantation of poppy is strictly banned/prohibited in the Wung Tangkhul Region with immediate effect. Non compliance of the order shall be treated as wilful defiance which will result in stern action as deemed fit.”

Owing to huge income generation in the region, deprived of employment and infrastructure, many people in the region have started opting for poppy cultivation. According to reports, approximately 500% increase in numbers of poppy cultivation was reported in Ukhrul and Kamjong Districts in the last 5 years, and 600% increase in area under poppy cultivation in the last 5 years. In 2021-22, around 2040 acres of poppy cultivation were destroyed in Ukhrul District and 239.8 acres in the Kamjong District.

Acknowledging the danger and damage it could cause to the society, the WTR said it issued the order. The people in general has welcomed the order issued by WTR.
